“Whatever you do to the least of my people, that you do to me.”

Matthew 25:40

Our Mission

The good works of Blessed Frederic Ozanam and St. Vincent de Paul continue and flourish today here in St. Joseph’s Guardian of the Holy Family Parish. Those who knock at our door are our neighbors – they are single mothers, struggling families, the elderly, the unwell – all who are in the midst of a personal crisis or who have fallen on hard times. Our advocate teams meet with these individuals offering spiritual comfort and financial assistance regardless of the person’s ethnic or social background, religious affiliation, health, or gender. The support they receive from the Society provides a chance for them to recover from their financial setback and may often prevent homelessness.

Jesus in the Breadline – Etching by Fritz Eichenberg

The Beginning

In 1832 an epidemic of cholera swept through Paris killing up to 1200 people each day. Large slum areas were forming; thousands of people lived without work, many lost their homes. Disease and starvation were common. A young student, Frederic Ozanam, had to walk through the poorer villages on his way to university each day and he soon became deeply moved at the hopeless state of families who were left without the support of breadwinners after the epidemic.

It was the goading of an anti-religious opponent in a debating society asking, “What is your church doing for the poor of Paris?” that pushed Ozanam into action. The following year, 20-year-old Ozanam along with six fellow students began visiting the poor in their homes. St. Vincent de Paul, patron saint of the poor, was chosen to be the patron saint of the group. This was the beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Today, there are over 800,000 Vincentians worldwide with a presence in 153 countries.
